There it is, London!
I am on top of Shooters Hill … I see from the top the London Eye, the Big Ben, the Tower Bridge … the City is there waiting for me … like I was already for the arrival in Cairo the euphoria for the arrival cancels all the tiredness and all the small pains accumulated in these 8000 and more km … since the suburbs of London there are signs of the Olympics and Paralympics … what strikes me immediately is the number of cyclists and cycling paths … it is not by chance that the United Kingsom has won Tour de France and many medals in cycling … Wiggins, Froome, Cavendish are the top … having champions helps to create … and vice versa … at the traffic lights there are groups of urban cyclists who remind me of the start of a Sunday race … Continua a leggere
Ecco Londra!
Sono in cima alla Shooters Hill … vedo dall’alto il London Eye, il Big Ben, il Tower Bridge … la City è li che mi aspetta … come già per l’arrivo al Cairo l’euforia dell’arrivo cancella la stanchezza e tutti i dolorini accumulati in questi 8000 km e passa … fin dalla periferia di Londra ci sono segni delle Olimpiadi e delle Paralimpiadi … quello che mi colpisce subito è il numero di ciclisti e piste ciclabili … non sarà un caso che il Regno Unito ha vinto Tour de France e tantissime medaglie nel ciclismo … Wiggins, Froome, Cavendish sono i top … avere campioni aiuta a creare il movimento … e viceversa … ai semafori ci sono gruppi di ciclisti urbani che ricordano le partenze di una gara della domenica … Continua a leggere
Che bello partire in discesa!
Da Cassel si va giù verso il mare che è ancora a più di 40 chilometri, non c’è vento, ci sono ciclisti che si allenano, non ne vedevo così tanti dal Moncenisio, arrivato a Bourbourg una signora in bicicletta con due borse laterali un po’ più piccole delle mie mi mostra dove prendere la strada per Calais … le indicazioni sono solo per l’autostrada … sebbene Calais sia solo a una ventina di chilometri anche quando chiedo indicazioni sembra far parte di un altro mondo … mi ha fatto ridere che la signora, forse consapevole di ciò, ha fatto uno sprint per una scorciatoia e tutta paonazza è sbucata da una via laterale per essere sicura che avessi preso la giusta direzione … arrivato quasi al mare con a Ovest Dunkerque e a Est Calais … sbaglio strada … un ciclista … incazzato perchè l’ho superato … e un ragazzo che fa jogging poi … mi danno indicazioni che si riveleranno completamente sbagliate … passo così da una centrale nucleare … vado si in direzione di Calais, ma visto che non volo mi devo fermare quando la strada finisce e trovo due specie di vasche formate da un canale … gremite di pesci e pescatori … uno di questi mi riporta sulla retta via facendomi strada con la sua Renault 4 … Continua a leggere
It is beautiful to start on a downhill!
From Cassel you go down towards the sea which is still more than 40 kilometers far, there is no wind, there are cyclists training, I had not seen so many from Moncenisio, arrived in Bourbourg a lady on a bicycle with two lateral panniers slightly smaller than mine shows me where to get the road to Calais … the directions are only for the highway … even though Calais is only about twenty kilometers from here when I ask for directions it seems to be part of another world all together … it made me laugh that the lady, maybe aware of that, made a sprint through a shortcut and all red in the face came out from a lateral road to make sure I had taken the right direction … arrived almost to the sea with Dunkerque in the West and Calais East … I take a wrong road … a cyclist … annoyed because I overtook him … and a jogging guy later … give me completely wrong directions … so I pass by a nuclear plant … yes I am heading towards Calais, but since I cannot fly I have to stop when the road ends and I find two sort of basins formed by a canal … full of fishes and fishermen … one of these leads me back to the right path on his Renault 4 … Continua a leggere

‘Vuoi andare a Laon? In bici? … non è possibile sono 50 km!’
Durante questo viaggio mi è capitato spesso di chiedere indicazioni sulla strada, e ricevere un giudizio di fattibilità non richiesto, poco importa che spieghi che arrivi dallo Zambia, che in media fai 130 km al giorno, sulla faccia del di queste persone rimane un’espressione convinta che non ce la farai, accompagnata da un sorriso di compatimento … loro sono sicuri che non è possibile … come il ragazzo che ho incontrato questa mattina a Reims ….
Il vento contrario è tornato insieme al freddo!

During this journey it has happened to me often to ask street directions, and to receive a not required feasibility judgment, it matters little that you explain that you come from Zambia, that on average you cover 130 km per day, on the face of these people remains an expression sure that you will not make it, accompanied by a sympathetic smile … they are sure it is not possible … like the guy I met this morning in Reims …
