“Why does this child need a wheelchair?” Asks the operator filling in the form at the distribution. The answer is so obvious… for a second, I cannot answer … Mercy sits on the floor the whole day on an empty mealie meal sack, she cannot move, she sits quietly but smiles with her eyes; when Giuditta plays with her with a stuffed doll she whispers “Agona” (she is sleeping) as they lay the doll kindly on a blanket.
Mercy lives in the village of Chikupi, she is 3-year-old, and thanks to our wheelchair accessible bus donated by Fondazione Fiorenzo Fratini ONLUS we took Mercy to collect her wheelchair from Lusaka and brought it back to her village.
As we were leaving Chikupi, Mercy was watching the sunset on the fields, maybe for the first time … This is why this child needs a wheelchair!
